"Browse By" Options in NoveList

Below is the picture of the main dropdown menu on the home page of NoveList.  In this post I will focus in the "Browse By" menu, and more specifically, the "Appeal" option.

Browse By Dropdown menu on NoveList

Once you have clicked on "Appeal" you will be taken to a new page that lets you "Make Your Own Appeal Mix."  I have chosen some random examples so that you can see the kinds of things you can pick from.

The entire list you choose from left drop-down boxes includes:

  • Character
  • Illustration
  • Pace
  • Storyline
  • Tone
  • Writing Style

Depending on which aspect of the story you're looking to focus on, there are several different options to choose from to narrow down your search.  For example, when looking for different types of storyline, the options you can choose between are as follows:

  • Action-packed
  • Character-driven
  • Intricately plotted
  • Issue-oriented
  • Nonlinear
  • Open-ended
  • Own voices
  • Plot-driven
  • Sweeping
  • Unconventional
  • World-building

As you can see there are SO many different types of storylines to choose from!

Once you have made your decisions on what you'd like to see in the story you are searching for, make sure you have the age range selected (mine is currently on Adult) and click the button below that reads "Find Titles."

The results will then show up to the right of your search:

As you can see, I only received one result.  Chances are, the more specific you are with your choices, the fewer results you will get back.  You can switch up your choices as much as you want until you find something that sounds good!

To find out what the book is about, all you have to do is hover your cursor over the cover and a small box with information will pop up!

Summary of book

From there you can search for the book in our library's catalog or ask the person at the help desk to assist you.  I hope that this tool in NoveList helps you the next time you're struggling to find something to read!  Until next time...
