Program Description

"He told me once to be brave, and though I have stood still while knives spun toward my face and jumped off a roof, I never thought I would need bravery in the small moments of my life. I do." ― Veronica Roth, Divergent

Tris Prior, the fictional character in the Divergent series learned many fighting techniques during her time with Dauntless, including weapons training. Join us as we learn more about close quarter weapon fighting as the highly skilled Freling Family showcases their incredible talents in this knife & stick fighting demonstration.

Author Veronica Roth is expected to visit the campus of Central Michigan University on October 27th. Register HERE to attend her keynote address and book signing. Attend one of our Divergent themed library programs this month and be entered into a drawing to win Roth's new release Poster Girl. Participate in one of our Divergent or Carve the Mark social media posts and you'll be entered into a drawing to win a seat at Ms. Roth's small group writing workshop.

The Frelings have studied several Southeast Asian Martial Arts including what is commonly called Fillipino Martial Arts, or FMA, (which includes Kali/Escrima/Doce Pares/Pangamot/Panantukan), Silat Suffian Bela Diri (machete-fighting from Brunei), Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee’s “philosophy” of fighting), Danzan Ryu Jujutsu (a Japanese style, not Brazilian), and Judo.  Aside from Judo, which is a competitive sport, these systems tend to incorporate drills to get the proper muscle memory for situations involving sticks, knives, and other close-quarter weapons.
