Your Chippewa River District Library serves the residents of the City of Mount Pleasant, Union Township and the Mount Pleasant School District.
Mount Pleasant's first library was organized in 1879. It was known as the Library, Literary and Musical Association of Mount Pleasant. After a fire destroyed most of the books in 1895, the Library, Literary and Musical Association faded away. Mount Pleasant's first public library opened on March 19, 1910. By 1920, the library had out-grown its location and needed a new one. A new location was found in the old Unitarian Church and the library moved to its present site. The Mount Pleasant Women's Club raised $2,693.12 for equipment to furnish the new location. It wasn't until 1957, with the building literally falling down, that Mount Pleasant got a new building to house its library. Not only was there to be a new building, but a new name for the library as well. On May 24, 1957, the library was dedicated to Mount Pleasant's veterans of all wars - Veterans Memorial Library. In 1985, the library was expanded to its current state.
In 1941, the first branch library was established in Isabella Township, Rosebush. In years to follow, branches in Weidman, Winn, Shepherd and Blanchard would open. All 5 of these branches are still currently in operation.
The Library of Michigan officially recognized the Chippewa River District Library System as a legally established district library on May 20, 1998. On December 21 of that year, voters approved a millage of 1.75 mills for ten years.
